Support Assistant
Reports & Responsible to:
Home Manager
This role is considered a 'care worker' within the meaning of the Care Standards Act
Job Summary:
Under the monitoring of more senior and experienced staff, to assist the Home Manager in the effective co-ordination of all services to the clients.
Responsibilities:
- General support of individuals within the Home, ensuring that they are fully involved and participate in the Homes' activities.
- To gain an awareness of the recording and observation systems in operations with the Home.
- To maintain good professional relationships with staff, relatives and other professionals.
- To care for individual's property, undertaking any aspect of Home management within the Home as required, e.g., domestic work, participating in meal preparation, laundry.
- To be aware of the need for promoting good public relations within the locality, so as to increase public awareness of, and sup port for, the aims and objectives of the Home as a whole.
- To report immediately any incident of ill-treatment, verbal, physical or mental, to the Home Manager.
- To report any complaint made by individuals at the Home, or on behalf of them by relatives, friends, to the Home Manager.
- Under the directions of keyworkers to assist in the development of all practical skills for client as used in shopping, visiting the doctor and dentist. This also includes areas of self-care in domestic, social and recreational activities.
- To attend staff meetings, to discuss and review training progress and the management of the Home. If these cannot be arranged within the Support Assistant's working hours, e.g. for evening or weekend Support Assistants, then basic training (e.g. induction, food hygiene, health and safety, first aid, Studio III, clinical training pertinent to the home) and staff meetings/handovers will be
specially arranged at a convenient time or overtime payment maybe made for attendance at such sessions at the Home
Managers discretion.
- To be familiar with the Home's fire, health and safety regulations, and ensure that they are strictly observed.
- To inform the Home Manager of faulty equipment and any other materials that may need replacement or repair.
- To attend relevant courses in order to develop a personal skill-base.
- Under the direction of Keyworkers, to assist in the development and implementation of opportunities for recreation,
socialisation, holidays, in line with the concept of normalisation.
- To undertake sleeping-in duties as directed by the Home Manager. This is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities, and the past
holder will be expected to perform other duties of a similar nature and level of expertise. This job description will be reviewed by mutual agreement with the post-holder and will reflect the views of the post-holder and take into considerations any service developments.
Support Assistants:
- Will always work under the direction of more senior or experienced staff (although they may accompany clients in the
community on a 1:1, dependent on client risk assessments).
- Will not take responsibility for the administrating of medication or responsibility for keyworking.
- Will at no time have the sole responsibility for the home (including wake nights and sole sleep nights).
