Location

Chesterwood is located in Kings Heath, a quiet leafy suburb of Birmingham. Haunch Lane shops and Kings Heath High Street are close by. They both offer numerous shops restaurants and entertainment. Kings Heath itself is based in the south of the city and is served by the most frequent bus route in Europe, therefore making the city centre extremely accessible. There are plenty of parks nearby including 2 in Kings Heath, Moseley Bog (inspirational to JRR Tolkien for Lord of the Rings), Swanshurst Park and Moseley Private Park to name but a few.

Accommodation

Chesterwood is a detached house on 2 floors, with 5 bedrooms, attractive, spacious lounge/dining room, conservatory, kitchen and office. There is a separate shower room and bathroom. There is a large garden (with ramp access) and summerhouse. The home has the use of a family car. Chesterwood has a separate laundry area with hand washing facilities.

Client Group

Chesterwood offers care to adults of varying age with an acquired brain injury in a small friendly environment. Chesterwood has ground floor rooms for clients with impaired mobility.

Activities

At Chesterwood many activities are accessible to clients including: bingo, aqua aerobics, the Billesley Tennis Centre, Cocksmoor Wood Leisure centre, Acocks Green Bowling alley, Courses on Independent Living Skills and Drama at Bournville College, Pottery, Textiles, Drama at the Midlands Art Centre. Maths, English and I.T at Mathew Boulton College and Employment Preparation Training (to enhance skills for entering employment). Within the City of Birmingham, major entertainment events take place at the Symphony Hall, NIA and NEC. The city also has three main theatres, the Alexander Theatre, The Birmingham Hippodrome and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre as well as the Midlands Arts Centre. Clients at Chesterwood regularly attend the 'Head Injuries Club' at Ladywood Arts Centre.

Staff

Chesterwood operates with an average of 3 staff on duty during the day and both sleep night and wake night staff at night. Wake night supervision can be provided on a needs basis. All staff receive extensive internal training supplemented by relevant external courses. Staff receive in-depth training and on-going support on low arousal techniques, which are the core of tracscare care philosophy. Training is outlined in more detail on the Staff Page.

Care

Chesterwood's philosophy is to offer a consistent high standard of care on an individual basis. Clients are encouraged to live a fulfilled life and are supported when necessary to achieve this. Giving the clients a choice and enabling them to decide for themselves helps to develop a sense of worth, self-esteem and confidence. The client's family are invited to participate in and oversee the care plans on offer, also the family / friends are encouraged to give constructive feedback regarding existing plans. The clients are involved in the decision making within the home, be it decoration, menu planning, planning activities, interviewing new staff. The staffing team is dedicated, hard working and committed to providing a high level of care. The home's care policy is outlined fully within tracscare Care Policy.

Clinical

Clients have access to tracscare Clinical Support Nurse plus consultant input in the areas of psychiatry and psychology, on an individual needs basis. When required, Speech Therapy and Drama Therapy have also been arranged. Oak Tree Lane is accessed for physiotherapy and hearing tests. The home also uses Greenridge Surgery, Baggleys Chemists (medication) and Birmingham University (encephalitis research). Chesterwood is registered for 6 adults with Learning Difficulty and Physical Handicap by the Commision for Social Care and Inspection (CSCI) The Commission can be contacted at
